Coffee and clove cigarette-filled introductions with musicians have been commonplace, a familiar routine built up around tracking down, recording, and investigating music in far-flung places. Over the years of doing Aural Archipelago, I’ve found a kind of comfort zone in the disparate worlds of traditional music that I encounter here. I’m in West Sumatra, and I’m out of my element.
